The Beatles' visit to India in the late 60's inspired Rich Roth onto the yoga path. His study began from Richard Hittleman's yoga paperback. Over the years flirtation with yoga continued off and on. Finally, in 2001, on his way home from completing 27 months as a United States Peace Corps Volunteer in Mozambique, Southeast Africa, Rich stopped in Calcutta to volunteer at Mother Theresa’s clinic. Then went on to Benares Hindu University in Varanasi, India to study with a Doctor of Yoga, Krishna Tripathi. Rich then trekked to Rishikesh, India, the yoga capital of India and where the Beatles' visited, to practice the yogic art with a ‘Sikh’ yoga teacher.
The following year he studied Sivandanda style yoga, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The summer of 2003 found Rich immersed in his first 200 hour Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training with Baba Hari Dass, the silent sage, at Mount Madonna Center, California. The following summer he spent an additional month studying Ashtanga yoga with 82 year old, master yoga teacher, B.N.S. Iyengar in Mysore, India.
Rich completed “YOGAED” teacher training in 2005 with the actress/instructor Leah Kalish, and then meditation teacher training at Ananda with instructor Savitri Simpson in Nevada City, California. The summers of '06 & '07, took Rich to practice and study yoga with Bob Smith and Ki McGraw of ‘Hatha Yoga Center, Seattle’ in Bali, Indonesia. There Rich completed a second yoga teacher training. His yoga study continued this year with an Amy Weintraub workshop, yoga retreat with Max Strom, and recently completing training with Katherine Roberts, "Yoga for Golfers".
Richard is a certified High School English teacher in Arizona. He is registered yoga teacher (500 RYT) by Yoga Alliance, and a member of Arizona Yoga Association. He intiated the yoga program at Rio Rico High School in "04 and taught yoga to the teachers/staff of SCVUSD #35 from '04--'07. Now teaching also at the Community Performing Arts Center in Green Valley and at the Tubac Community Center.
Rich's ‘Hatha Yoga’ instruction is eclectic, varied, and global. This leads him to emphasize a long & extended spine, like a majestic saguaro cactus. On a recent visit to the rheumatologist, he was informed that he grew a 1/4 of inch--nothing to sneeze at being older than Jack Benny.
His classes include various breathing techniques and asanas to relax, refresh, renew, revitalize the body, mind, & spirit.
Rich opened Yoga Saguaro home studio in September of 2007, fulfilling a long held dream to concentrate on yoga instruction. Popular Tucson KGUN 9 TV, news anchor and fellow yoga teacher, Guy Atchley taught the first class at Yoga Saguaro Home studio.
